It’s not a good idea to start creating your website or blog directly in live hosting. Better if the development phase can be done in your local computer which will fasten the process. As you are here, I assume that you may already know about what WordPress is. In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to run WordPress in your local machine. WordPress needs PHP & MySQL support to run, those things are already executable in most of the live hosting but not in your computer. That’s why first we’ll need to install a local server in our computer which will enable you to run PHP & MySQL database. Then WordPress will be installed inside it.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is the simplest, most popular way to create your own website or blog. In fact, WordPress powers over 35.2% of all the websites on the Internet. Yes – more than one in four websites that you visit are likely powered by WordPress.
WordPress is an open-source content management system licensed under GPLv2, which means that anyone can use or modify the WordPress software for free. A content management system is basically a tool that makes it easy to manage important aspects of your website – like content – without needing to know anything about programming.
WordPress provides you many options to customize your blog or site anytime with their rich themes and plugins. WordPress store has a lot of free themes and plugins you can use to customize your site without having knowledge of programming.
Download & Install Xampp – Local Server
Xampp an Open Source web server with all the tools and language support built-in to it. It’s ready to use and makes it easier for developers to take their code and host it locally and test the same.
XAMPP stands for Cross-Platform (X), Apache (A), MariaDB (M), PHP (P) and Perl (P). It is a simple, lightweight Apache distribution that makes it extremely easy for developers to create a local web server for testing purposes. Everything needed to set up a web server – server application (Apache), database (MariaDB), and scripting language (PHP) – is included in an extractable file. XAMPP is also cross-platform, which means it works equally well on Linux, Mac and Windows.
You can download the latest version of Xampp for your Computer from Apache Friends. After downloading, install it in your computer. I have given some steps you will find to complete while downloading & installing.
Setup WordPress in Xampp
Your first job is to download the latest version of WordPress. WordPress is not an executable installer, it is a zip file containing huge amount of PHP and other files that will generate your site from installing through your browser.
After downloading the zip file, extract it and paste everything in your xampp -> htdocs folder, as you may know that the htdocs folder is your server’s root public directory. Also you will need to create a database using phpMyAdmin which will be used by WordPress to store every data. Don’t worry, I will be attaching a video which will clear all your confusion from installing Xampp to setup WordPress. Major things will be described in the video below.
